People are wondering why Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie’s romance movie “The Tourist” was not nominated for an Oscar. It was not nominated in the “Best Movie” category, nor was it nominated under any of the individual award categories. It is a bit of a shock considering how entertaining the movie was, and considering how the movie had such a high caliber cast.
Green Smoke electronic cigarette is particularly interested in such a discussion, considering how prominently electronic cigarettes were displayed in the movie, and how they were such an integral part of the movie. A movie like The Tourist has done wonders to expose the electronic cigarette to the public as a viable alternative to cigarettes. Had it received an Oscar nomination, and even more so had it won the award, it would have had a much more powerful effect on the smoking public.
“The Tourist” was nominated for the Golden Globes awards in a number of categories, including Best Movie. That makes it all the more surprising that it did not get at least a nomination for the Oscars. What is the difference between the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards Oscars? The Golden Globe awards are for all forms of media – both movies and television, while the Academy Awards, the Oscars, are more limited to movies alone. As well, there are more individual award categories in the Oscars than in the Golden Globe awards. The voting body for the Academy Award Oscars are therefore going to be using a different criteria for the nominations and awards then the voting body of the Golden Globe awards, as the whole composition of the awards is different.
So, why was The Tourist not nominated for an Oscar?
In my opinion The Tourist was not nominated for an Oscar because it was not a great movie. To be sure it was good. The acting of Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, and even Timothy Dalton, was as riveting as always. The movie was entertaining. It was colorful and fresh. It was humorous. However, it was not great. I thought that many parts of the movie were excellent, but the move from piece to piece was very choppy, with no natural flow. It went quickly from comedic to action to comedic to romantic. “The Tourist” was a fun and entertaining movie to watch, but it did not make me feel as though I was part of a greater story. I did not get caught up in the emotions of the characters, nor did I get the feeling of suspense that I could not wait to see what would happen next. I was basically apathetic to the storyline, though I enjoyed watching the movie, and found it entertaining. That, however, is not enough for the ultimate award of the Oscars.
Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie alone were not enough to push the Tourist into the Oscars.
