Things to Do This Summer

Summer’s a great time to get out and enjoy the sunshine. There are a million things you can do to enjoy the weather and here at Green Smoke® we want everyone to have the most enjoyable summer they can possibly have.

Remember to put on sunscreen before you go out in the sun.

Hiking & Biking
For me personally I love the outdoors. When the weather starts warming up, the first place you’ll find me is in the woods near my home. Now I’m more of a hardcore outdoorsman, especially when it comes to mountain biking, but hiking and biking is something that can be enjoyed by anyone. If crazy mountain climbing, biking, and hiking is your thing, please be my guest (maybe give me a call and if I’m in your area I’ll join you), but most state parks have plenty of trails that range from easy to challenging. Get out there with a group of friends, the more people you have the more fun you’ll have (and the safer it will be).Remember to drink plenty of water and wear lightweight and light-colored clothing if you’re going to be in the sun. Don’t forget sunscreen.

Beach

Who doesn’t love going to the beach? I know I do. It’s a great activity for everyone and you’ll get a great tan while you’re there.

In addition to going in the water and sunbathing I’d also recommend horseback riding, windsurfing and body surfing (if they’re available in your area.) These are great ways to experience the sand and sun from different angles and at different speeds.

Outdoor Concerts

Many cities will host outdoor concerts in the park…and many times it’s free. This is a great way to get out and enjoy the crisp night air, meet people and enjoy the music.

Visit the Zoo

Going to the zoo isn’t just something for kids. It’s a great place to get some exercise and learn some really cool things about the animals that share our world.

Get Some Friends Together and have a BBQ

July 4th has come and gone but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still get together with friends and have a good time with good food. Pull out the hot dogs, hamburgers, steak and beer and prepare a midsummer night’s feast for you and your friends and family.

Go Canoeing or Rafting

As I mentioned before, I love the outdoors and a great way to experience them is on the water. There are 2 ways to enjoy the water: You can go for a calm water experience relaxing in a canoe, or a more exciting, whitewater adventure. Whitewater rafting is a great way to build up your upper body strength and to have a lot fun while doing it.

Tour a Local Winery

Most people aren’t aware of this, but taking a tour of a local winery can be a fascinating experience. Learning how they harvest the grapes, and the pressing, and the fermenting…and most wineries will even let you sample their wines at the end of the tour. (Just make sure you have a designated driver.)

Visit a Local Historical Site

Everywhere around you is history and it can be pretty cool to discover what the area you live in was like generations before you were born. For instance when I was in high school, I lived in Pikesville, MD. Right behind our library was an old garrison. Two blocks east was a road called Seven Mile Lane. During the War of 1812 the British fleet invaded Baltimore via the Inner Harbor. Their shells had a range of 7 miles. The United States military needed to keep their arms and weapons out of the firing range of the British. Seven Mile Lane was the edge of the British’s firing range and a few blocks away (where library and garrison are) was where the United States kept their weapons and ammunition.

As a side note my supermarket was on Seven Mile Lane. Pretty cool.

The point is there’s so much you can do this summer! So much you can learn and so much fun to be had! So get out there and enjoy the world that we live in!
